BUG-097 - The Kombi Project

Engine Out

I had never taken an engine out of a VW before, but I had always heard it was quite easy - and it was. Nothing major to report, follow the manual and it is really quite simple

Here are some photos of the engine on the bench. How dirty is it? Well, after 34 years, what can you expect?

Look at the oil leaks. This is the main reason for engine removalMore dirt and rubbishPetrol leaks, oil leaks, vacuum leaks - how did it ever run.

Here is something I didn't expect - two blown head gaskets on the drivers side! I thought it was running OK!

See the oily deposits between the heads and the cylinders. Blown head gaskets.

Not only that, both head gaskets were blown on the other side as well!

It is way too dirty to work on it its current state, so off to Car Lovers for a quick degrease.
